Sony to Resurrect Its Consumer Robot Business

Sony has revealed plans to work on AI (Artificial Intelligence) robots that can form an emotional bond with human at the company's corporate strategy meeting on June 29, reported the Nikkei. A new robot-focused organization within Sony was established in April this year and is working on robotics and AI business again after the company decided to abandon AIBO, the popular entertainment robotic dogs, in 2006. Moreover, Sony also put an investment in May into Cogitai, an US-based AI startup, for the new technology. To seek out promising technologies, Sony will establish a $10-billion-yen (US$97.5 million) Sony Innovation Fund in July. Meanwhile, Sony reaffirmed its overall target for operating profit of 500 billion yen (US$4.9 billion; US$1=102.6 Yen) in the fiscal year ending March 2018.
